Engaging East Africa’s Teens & Youth in Birdwatching: The Uganda Young Birders Club
Nurturing the Next Generation of Birdwatchers
Uganda’s birdwatching scene is flourishing, thanks to the tireless efforts of dedicated national and local bird guides. This momentum owes much to organisations like the Uganda Safari Guides Association (USAGA) and the Uganda Bird Guides Club, whose commitment to conservation and community empowerment has made Uganda a leading birding destination.
Why We Need Young Birders
Despite this progress, the long-term future of birding in Uganda faces a significant challenge: a lack of youth involvement. Without introducing children to birdwatching early in life, sustaining the country’s birding culture could prove difficult.
Recognizing this gap, Avian Safaris, in collaboration with other conservation-minded stakeholders and the Uganda Bird Guides Club, launched the Uganda Young Birders Club. This grassroots program aims to inspire, educate, and support Uganda’s future birders.

A Promising Start
The club currently consists of the children of active bird guides—young minds already surrounded by avian passion and knowledge. By formalizing their involvement, we’re cultivating not only birdwatchers but future conservationists, ecotourism professionals, and citizen scientists.
This is more than just a club—it’s a movement. A foundation for what we envision will be a larger, more diverse bird guides community across Uganda and East Africa in the years to come.
Expanding Across East Africa
While our roots are in Uganda, our vision is regional. We aim to extend the Young Birders program across Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania, building a cross-border network of youth who care deeply about birds and their habitats. This East African initiative will promote regional collaboration, knowledge sharing, and stronger conservation outcomes.

How You Can Help
Whether you’re a fellow birder, nature lover, or simply someone who values environmental education, you can make a meaningful impact in the following ways:
Join Us in the Field
Volunteer your time or attend one of our youth birding outings. Your presence as a mentor, guide, or even a friendly observer brings motivation and joy to our young birders.
Donate Birding Equipment
Have a spare pair of binoculars, a telescope, or a gently used bird field guide? These tools are priceless to our young naturalists and help bridge the equipment gap that often hinders participation.
Contribute Scholastic Supplies
Our youngest birders are still in school — and they benefit greatly from basic scholastic items such as notebooks, pencils, pens, backpacks, and storybooks. Your donation supports both their education and their passion for birds.
Every Contribution Counts
Whether you send a box of supplies, donate a used spotting scope, or simply help spread the word, you become part of a movement that empowers children through nature and conservation. Your support helps us create confident, knowledgeable, and compassionate leaders for tomorrow.
To Donate or Partner With Us
