A Premier Birding Hotspot in Uganda
Lutembe Bay is a paradise for waterbirds. It supports over 108 bird species, including 26 Palearctic migrants. Since 1993, birdwatchers have recorded regular waterfowl counts, proving its importance.
Because of its large bird population, Lutembe Bay is an Important Bird Area (IBA). It also holds Ramsar Site status due to its international conservation value. Thousands of waterbirds gather here to roost and feed, creating an unforgettable spectacle.
A Sanctuary for Rare Birds
Lutembe Bay is home to eight of the twelve species endemic to the Lake Victoria Basin biome. Occasionally, visitors spot rare species like the Shoebill, Tawny Pipit, and Madagascar Squacco Heron. These unique birds make every visit exciting.

As you explore the bay, you will notice colorful species such as the Purple Starling, Papyrus Gonolek, and Fawn-breasted Waxbill. Meanwhile, White-winged and Whiskered Terns fill the sky in impressive numbers.

Lutembe Bay offers an incredible mix of wetland birds and forest songbirds. Yellow-billed Ducks and White-faced Whistling Ducks display aerial acrobatics over the water. Black-necked Weavers and Holub’s Golden Weavers add color to the landscape.
Additionally, the Black Egret uses its umbrella-feeding technique to catch fish. In the reeds, the Winding Cisticola calls loudly, making it easy to locate.
