Rwenzori Turaco – Gallirex johnstoni
The Rwenzori Turaco Gallirex johnstoni belongs to the family Musophagidae and was formerly classified in the monotypic genus Ruwenzorornis.
Recognized subspecies include:

Physical Description
This large-sized bird measures 40–45 cm in length. It displays glossy bluish-purple plumage on the head, neck, and upperparts, contrasted by vivid crimson-red flight feathers that become prominent in flight. The combination of colours makes it one of the most visually arresting turacos in the Albertine Rift.
Habitat and Distribution
Endemic to the Albertine Rift montane forests, the Rwenzori Turaco inhabits elevations between 2,600 and 3,600 meters. Its range spans the Rwenzori Mountains in Uganda, parts of Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The species thrives in montane and bamboo forests, and forest clearings.
Feeding Behaviour of Gallirex Johnstoni
Primarily frugivorous, this turaco feeds on fruits, berries, and seeds. It supplements its diet with flowers, tender leaves, and occasionally insects. They forage in small family groups, often gliding between tall trees and bamboo clusters.
Breeding and Nesting of Gallirex Johnstoni
While its breeding behaviour is not well documented, it is believed to form monogamous pairs, nesting in trees using twigs and moss to form a small cup-shaped nest. Vocal duets and territorial displays are common during the mating season.

The Rwenzori Turaco is listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN due to habitat loss, mainly from logging, farming, and human encroachment. Additionally, illegal capture for the pet trade remains a concern. These pressures continue to shrink its already limited range.
